I started out as a scientist. As a child, I took after my grandfather, a chemical engineer, and it was assumed I would go to college and excel at chemistry, biology, and physics. What was unexpected was the deeply nurturing and spiritual side of me that developed as surely as my love of scientific rigor. While I initially planned to become an OB/GYN, I soon discovered that the medical model of delivering babies felt more like an assembly line than a miracle. I turned to midwifery and never looked back.
I graduated magna cum laude from St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN in 2007 with a B.A. in Biology. I taught high school chemistry and 8th grade general science for several years in New England before deciding that teaching was not my passion. I worked as a medical technical writer for another few years, during which time I got married to a biochemist and realized I could do anything I set my mind to. In the spring of 2010, I applied to midwifery school at the Nizhoni Institute of Midwifery. I graduated with Honors in November 2013.
I trained as a doula and began attending births in 2011. I apprenticed under midwives in St. George, UT, San Diego, CA, and Orange, CA from 2012-2013. After this, I traveled to several birth centers for extended clinical rotations in 2014, starting with 5 weeks at Better Birth, in northern Utah, where I attended an intensive skills workshop and assisted at both homebirths and deliveries in the birth center. I volunteered as an advanced student midwife at MamaBaby Haiti, a nonprofit birth center in Cap Haitien, Haiti, which provides free and low-cost services to women in northern Haiti. I finished my training at NOVA Natural Birth Center in Chantilly, VA, learning from four incredible midwives and gaining the competence needed for a solo practice.
I live in San Bruno, CA with my husband Jeffry, son Will, and daughter Lillian. I love spending time with my family and friends, especially if I can be out in the sunshine. I am involved with several parenting groups and playgroups in the area, and I maintain connections to local doulas, midwives, and childbirth educators. I am also a member of Coastside Birth Options, a consulting group that helps families put together birth plans and acquire the necessary village of support for their unique birthing and family goals.
