Services

Midwifery care is for everyone, not just homebirthing mothers. No matter where you choose to deliver your baby, we can enhance your experience and help you bring your baby earthside in love and security. Coastal Maternity Care provides in-home visits for pre-conception, prenatal and postpartum for both mothers and babies. We also offer in-home Well Woman visits.

Homebirth

The Coastal Maternity Care homebirth package includes:

  • prenatal care with visits in the comfort of your home
  • in-home labor and birth midwifery care
  • use of one of our La Bassine birth pools with all necessary supplies
  • all disposable homebirth supplies
  • postpartum care for 6 weeks after the birth for both mother and baby

Homebirths are offered for women who are experiencing normal pregnancies and will be attended by your Licensed Midwife and a qualified Midwife Assistant.

Prenatal Care

Prenatal care is the foundation of a healthy pregnancy and birth. Prenatal care with a midwife includes nutritional and lifestyle counseling as well as extensive preparation for making informed choices during birth, postpartum and parenting. Coastal Maternity Care has a lab account and can order and draw most prenatal testing. If you are interested in genetic testing or ultrasounds, we can refer you.

A typical prenatal visit lasts a full hour and is composed of two parts. A physical exam of the mother and evaluation of fetal growth and wellbeing ensures that you and your baby are healthy and low-risk. Each visit will also have an educational component to help you plan for the healthiest pregnancy and birth you can have, and to prepare you for the challenges and wonders of caring for your newborn. Topics may include optimal nutrition and exercise, planning for labor and birth, conversations about family life, what to expect when breastfeeding a newborn, and more.

As your pregnancy progresses, you will be given access to resources and referrals to enable you, as an empowered consumer, to make the best decisions for your body, your baby, and your family.

Hospital Birth

For women who for personal or medical reasons choose to give birth in the hospital, Coastal Maternity Care can continue to provide midwifery labor support. Having your midwife by your side helps reduce anxiety and improve outcomes. Under most circumstances, you and your baby can still receive postpartum care in your home from your midwife following your discharge from the hospital.

You can also choose Supplemental Midwifery Care to give you the best chance at a healthy and supported pregnancy and/or postpartum, with full hour-long visits in your home, even with a planned hospital birth. The place you should give birth is the place YOU feel safest and most comfortable. There is no right or wrong answer, only the answer that is best for you and your family. Your midwife will never pressure you to abandon your own values and goals surrounding your birth.

Postpartum Care

Postpartum care extends from the birth until six weeks postpartum. It covers care for the normal newborn and postpartum mother including: breastfeeding support, evaluation of newborn weight gain and overall health, baby care, and healing after the birth.

In many countries, it is normal for women to return home after giving birth in the hospital and receive in-home care from a midwife. No matter where you give birth, you deserve the chance to rest and recover in the comfort of your home. Hiring a midwife for postpartum support brings you in-home visits to help you heal, work on breastfeeding, weigh the baby regularly, answer all your questions about your newborn, and help rally your support network to care for you properly. All records are kept electronically and can easily be faxed to your child’s pediatrician or to your primary care provider, ensuring that you receive the greatest continuity of care throughout the first weeks of your baby’s life.

Well Woman Care

I have a problem with the way we take care of women in our society. Getting your health screening and Pap test should not be a hideous experience. Your midwife will come to your home and spend 1-2 hours talking to you, discussing your health history, working with you on improving your nutrition, encouraging you in caring for your strong body in the best ways. All of your basic laboratory screening can be done in your own space, without a frightening power differential between you and the provider you have chosen to help you care for yourself. You can have your Pap test done on your own bed or sofa, in a mutually respectful exchange that teaches you about your body and is built on the practice of affirmative consent. I affirm the experiences of survivors of sexual assault, transgender men, and women who have never had a pelvic exam before.

All laboratory testing will be billed to your insurance company. I am happy to provide you an itemized invoice with ICD-10 and CPT codes so you can submit to your insurance for reimbursement of your visit.

In the privacy and comfort of your home, with a glass of wine or a bar of dark chocolate, you can take charge of your health.

Education

Coastal Maternity Care recommends that all women seek out a Childbirth Preparation Course, to help you prepare physically, mentally, and emotionally for the arrival of your baby. Receiving multiple perspectives and forging bonds with other expectant parents can be a valuable experience and many women stay close to their classmates for years afterwards. For those who prefer not to seek an outside class or have difficult work schedules to juggle, group and individual education sessions are available from Coastal Maternity Care. Some of the topics include:

  • Fertility Awareness and Natural Family Planning
  • Pregnancy
  • Childbirth Preparation
  • Sibling Preparation
  • Breastfeeding
  • Introducing Solid Foods
  • Diapering and Pottying Options

Classes are customized to your individual birth preferences and parenting style and are offered judgment-free by a Licensed Midwife and experienced mother.

Finances

Coastal Maternity Care works with Sandi Blankenship of SLB Billing, which will bill your PPO insurance for you at the end of your pregnancy. The first stage in the process is to apply for a Verification of Benefits through their website here. SLB will contact your insurance company and obtain an estimate of your share of the cost vs what your insurance will pay.

My total fee for midwifery care is $6,000.00; however, I have a number of discounts available so very few clients end up paying the full amount. After your delivery, your insurance will be billed for the global fee for all care received. When you choose Coastal Maternity Care for your pregnancy and birth, you have the option to schedule an entire meeting just to discuss all the details of the financial arrangement, so you can ask any questions you may have and we can come to an agreement that is workable for everyone involved. Otherwise, we will devote at least an hour to discussing the contract and your financial responsibility during one of our early prenatal sessions. My goal is to be as transparent as possible, so you understand up front what you will be charged and when, without any nasty surprises.

Coastal Maternity Care is committed to making midwifery care accessible and affordable. Individuals who have an HMO or no health insurance are encouraged to contact us to discuss current fees, flexible payment options, and available discounts. Some of these discounts include payment in full by 36 weeks, self-pay (that is, choosing not to bill insurance), transfers with full records from another provider, and repeat clients. I offer a $1000.00 discount to all families on Medi-Cal, in an attempt to make midwifery care a valid option for families from all backgrounds. I also offer a discount to clients who hire a doula for their birth. I strongly encourage every family to hire a doula, but especially first-time mothers, and offering a discount to clients with a doula helps make this a reality.

If financial hardship is preventing you from hiring a midwife, email me at emily@coastalmaternity.com. I will work with you to come up with a solution. Financial difficulty should not dictate your healthcare decisions.
